Who's Going to Canzine West (Vancouver) 2014?

skyscrapersallonfire:

I just registered for a table; my first!

Guess I’d better get some work done. ;) It’s likely that I’ll put together a compilation of previous zine art/posts; any requests?

Reblogging (again!) because I really want to know who else is going.

Neurosis - “Locust Star”

I don’t believe that religion or a sense of spirituality can “save” anybody that is suffering; but this band - and this song in particular - was the one thing I could turn to when I first experienced major depression. This song didn’t tell me it would all get better soon, that I had so much to live for, bla, bla, bla -it is a raw, ferocious howl of pain and anger. I took comfort in its honesty, and in the strength it takes to stare down that kind of existential agony and simply accept that pain IS.

A lot of people in this culture look away from pain; somehow they believe that it is shameful for anyone to be anything but happy, but their open disdain for any expression of a “negative” emotion is just so much bullshit - it’s all about hiding from what they fear in themselves, by shunning others who don’t (or can’t) hide from it. This song is an expression of MY “faith” - we suffer, and yet we endure. What shame is there in that?

A still from the opening scene (with subtitles) from my new favourite film,  Bobcat Goldthwait’s God Bless America, which is a brilliant and darkly funny satire about modern American culture.
There are several great monologues throughout, but my favourite line is about pie (and that’s all I’m going to say, as it’s too funny for spoilers.)

Suppose that: a) there is a god; and b) it has a divine sense of humour; then, if George Romero were to die tomorrow, he would have to come back from the grave and eat the brains of the living.

I don’t know what it is about Tumblr’s zine crowd but they’re never around on the weekend. Reblogging for those who missed it the first time.

Add this to my 5 Things About Me: Personality Type - INTJ (Intuitive Thinking Judging)

Because someone asked, ages ago, and I never finished the list. I think this would be Thing #4.

Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps, American Mary) looking for trouble in this scene from the forthcoming See No Evil 2. Directed with luscious maleficence by “twisted twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska. :)
